Tomatoes

Roma and other varieties of field tomatoes are available late in the summer to early Fall.  A ripe field tomato should be firm, though not rock-hard, and have a slightly supple quality to its surface; it should feel heavy for its size. Avoid any sign of mould or bruising. The occasional small surface cracks at the bottom of a tomato won’t affect its quality. Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, to prevent uneven ripening. Available July-October.


Pumpkins

For Halloween pumpkins, look for a sturdy stem, well-rounded shape and one that will stand properly, but is not too heavy (thin walls are easier to carry). For cooking, small pie pumpkins are best. Look for a firm, smooth orange skin with a heavy feel for its size. Avoid cracks and bruises, which can bring on premature deterioration. Small to medium sizes are best for kitchen use because of their finer texture and flavour.  Available in the Autumn.  Also available: squash & gourds.


Chrysanthemums

Modern cultivated chrysanthemums are showier than their wild relatives. The flower heads occur in various forms, and can be daisy-like or decorative, like pompons or buttons.  Full early sun, at least 5-6 hours daily. Well-drained soil suggested. Garlic

Eggplant

Look for a plump, heavy unwrinkled vegetable that feels quite firm to the touch. It’s harvested ripe and best eaten soon after purchase. Traditional Mediterranean dishes include eggplant parmigiana, ratatouille, moussaka, eggplant stuffed with rice, or hot and sour Spanish eggplant. Available Aug-Oct.


Kale

Kale, also known as leaf cabbage and grown right here at Seaway Farms! They have green or purple leaves, in which the central leaves do not form a head. Kale freezes well and tastes sweeter and more flavourful after being exposed to a frost. Tender kale greens can provide an intense addition to salads, particularly when combined with other such strongly flavoured ingredients as dry-roasted peanuts, soy sauce-roasted almonds, red capsicum flakes, or a sesame-based dressing.  Late Summer-Autumn.
