Summer at Seaway Farms

Our garden centre offers a variety of herb plants for your summer garden, seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as annual and perennial flowers for your gardens. Seaway also has a selection of merchandise for the gardening enthusiast to help you throughout the growing season.  Here is a list of some of the garden plants, fruits, and vegetables available to purchase at our Seaway Farms garden centre – from our garden to your table!

Peaches

You can buy fresh, local Niagara peaches in the summer months of July, August & September. Peaches are a nutritious snack that can be eaten fresh from the farm, cooked into a dessert, made into a preserve, or canned to enjoy later in the year. Read More


Tomatoes

Roma and other varieties of field tomatoes are available late in the summer to early Fall.  A ripe field tomato should be firm, though not rock-hard, and have a slightly supple quality to its surface; it should feel heavy for its size. Avoid any sign of mould or bruising. The occasional small surface cracks at the bottom of a tomato won’t affect its quality. Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, to prevent uneven ripening. Available July-October.


Peppers

Our customers love our Sweet, Hot, Red, Green & Yellow peppers. One raw medium sweet pepper contains 19 calories and provides an excellent source of Vitamin C and a source of folacin. Available ready to eat July-Oct. Want to grow your own? Pepper plants available in the Spring.


Cherries

The deep red colour of ripe Ontario cherries is as sweet to the tastebuds as they are to the eye. This time of year the Niagara orchards are bursting with vibrant red as the farmers harvest their crops so our local customers can enjoy. Available June, July Read More + Recipes


Apricots

Apricots are grown right here at Seaway Farms! Bright orange with a rosy or peachy blush usually means ripe fruit with sweetness and flavour. An excellent source of beta-carotene, Vitamin C and potassium. Available July, August


Garlic

Garlic is a staple of many world cuisines, and are known to have many health benefits. Grown right her at the farm, Garlic is available July – December at our Garden Centre. Garlic Scapes, an Asian delicacy is available in the summer months. Read More > Cooking with Garlic Scapes


Eggplant

Look for a plump, heavy unwrinkled vegetable that feels quite firm to the touch. It’s harvested ripe and best eaten soon after purchase. Traditional Mediterranean dishes include eggplant parmigiana, ratatouille, moussaka, eggplant stuffed with rice, or hot and sour Spanish eggplant. Available Aug-Oct.


Strawberries

Look for berries that are completely red with no white or green spots and have a sweet smell. Avoid crushed berries and be wary of berries packed in juice-stained containers. The size of the berries is not important. All strawberries large and small are equally sweet and juicy.


Kale

Kale, also known as leaf cabbage and grown right here at Seaway Farms! They have green or purple leaves, in which the central leaves do not form a head. Kale freezes well and tastes sweeter and more flavourful after being exposed to a frost. Tender kale greens can provide an intense addition to salads, particularly when combined with other such strongly flavoured ingredients as dry-roasted peanuts, soy sauce-roasted almonds, red capsicum flakes, or a sesame-based dressing.  Late Summer-Autumn.


Bachelor Button - Centaurea cyanus

Bachelor’s button an easy-growing perennial with papery flowers atop tall stems. The blooms can be used for cutting and drying. Full to part sun. Grows 1-3 feet high by 1-2 feet wide. Colours are blue, pink, or white. Blooms in Spring and Summer. Low maintenance, good for containers, and Native to Niagara.
